Dances With Wolves actor, Graham Greene, has died

The Oscar-nominated actor died in Ontario after a lengthy illness. He was 73.

Actor Graham Greene, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in Dances With Wolves, has died aged 73.

The Canadian First Nations actor - who has been credited for opening the doors for Indigenous actors in Hollywood - died Monday in a Toronto hospital after a long illness, Deadline reported,

In a statement, Green's agent said the actor was a "great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed".

Born in 1952 on the Six Nations Reserve in Ohsweken, he performed in Canadian theatre and television, before making his film debut in 1983's Running Brave.

He was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Kicking Bird (Ziŋtká Nagwáka) in the 1990 western Dances With Wolves.

He had leading roles in films such as Thunderheart, Transamerica and Wind River, and also appeared in Maverick, Die Hard with a Vengeance, The Green Mile, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and many others.

One of Greene’s final roles was in the television series Reservation Dogs, which follows the lives of Indigenous teenagers in rural Oklahoma.

Greene was also a Grammy, Gemini and Canadian Screen Award winner and Independent Spirit nominee. He has a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame and received the Governor General’s Performing Arts Award.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Hilary Blackmore; daughter Lilly Lazare-Greene; and grandson Tarlo.
